Ruhie, thanks for reading. I'm so glad it was helpful. It can be difficult to believe that the work will lead somewhere while you're stuck in the middle of the process -- but the more I do it, the more I see that it's true.
I'm glad you unearthed your diamond and slowly after many stops and starts, I'm unearthing mine. I wish it didn't take me until my late 50's. Your journey inspires me.
First, from a Michigander, how absolutely lovely to know you’ve been here and have steeped in some of our magic!
Next, so much to say about motherhood and the creative self… ugh. Too much. What I’ll share tho is how connected I felt to your description of needing and slowly cultivating your own space, figuratively and physically. I’m just now getting to a point (after 6+ years) of reallocating space for art making, and it feels so uniquely balanced between the internal and external. Am I reading you, and me, right??
It took me until zooming with Covid in my virtual studio to begin to carve out my own art space! You are doing great! (I am 72, taught art k-3, raised 3 daughters, still teaching art). Keep creating!
Bree and Rose -- I'm so glad you found each other here and are helping one another along. Michigan was beautiful, we're so happy we were able to go.
As for space for art-making...for me, it's been that the more I let go of NEEDING to find a separation between internal/external, the more I'm able to tap into my creativity and apply it to whatever task it at hand. Less boundary between art/life and more mess, more fun, more making.
I love this, Meera, thank you. There’s absolutely a release involved, a freedom from the pressure to silo these different parts of ourselves. What a beautiful way to shift the perspective. 🧡🫶🏻
"...I spent the year shaping my creativity into the vessel itself: I wanted it to live everywhere." - this made me smile! During my 4th trimester, which was just a couple months ago, I found myself aching to channel my creativity into something. I felt stuck and like I couldn't do anything. I ended up signing up for a writing course and that inspired me to start my Substack. Reading about your daughters inspires me to write about mine 🧡
Your diamond analogy is so inspiring 💛 A reminder to believe in ourselves, our creative work, and to find joy in the process.

Doreen, I'm so glad you're finding yours! I know it feels like a slow-go, but I think what matters most is that you're trying.
Thank you Meera! I'm also staying consistent with it -even if it is slow.

Rose! Thank you! What kind encouragement, and with the extra oomph of such formidable street cred. 🤓 You’re awesome, and I will! 🙏🏻🫶🏻
